Pamoja Farms (PCIF Development Cooperative)
About
PCIF Development Cooperative Inc. (Pamoja Farms) is a non-profit organization formed by members of the African-Canadian community, dedicated to transforming the narrative of poverty and marginalization within the Black community by creating avenues leading to ownership and financial security. Pamoja's initial pursuit of this mission involved the acquisition of 100 acres of organic farmland in 2021, giving rise to the community farming project known as "Pamoja Farms."
Recognizing the stark underrepresentation of Black farmers, constituting only approximately 3% of farmers in Ontario and Canada, Pamoja Farms aspires to play a pivotal role within one of Ontario's key industries: agriculture. Currently embarking on a significant cooperative agricultural project, Pamoja Farms aims to provide affordable access to organic produce, primarily benefiting the nearly 40% of Black Canadians residing in Ontario's urban areas.
By cultivating over 600 garlic bulbs and a quarter-acre of diverse produce, including fruit trees, berries, and herbs, their mission is to establish a thriving mixed agricultural enterprise, contributing to Ontario's rich farming legacy. Their vision extends further, aspiring to become one of Canada's foremost certified organic food producers.
Financial Need
The loan from the Fair Finance Fund will support Pamoja's transformative vision, allowing them to build infrastructure for a 5-acre farm and fostering self-sufficiency, agricultural entrepreneurship, and community cohesion. This capital will facilitate land clearance, fencing, equipment acquisition, staffing, and the comprehensive launch of the farm, advancing it toward self-sustainability.
