EcoWool
EcoWool's mission is to revitalize the local wool industry in a manner that supports farmers, employees, and local communities. By establishing Canada's first dedicated waste fibre mill, EcoWool aims to buy local wool at above market prices, thereby enhancing the financial stability of farms. The mill will also provide training and employment at living wages, allowing employees to contribute meaningfully to the business. EcoWool aspires to create a vibrant community focused on the sustainable processing of waste wool into eco-friendly products, which helps reduce carbon emissions and environmental pollution.
Financing from the Fair Finance Fund will allow EcoWool to purchase essential equipment, renovate the mill, and cover operational costs. This includes investing in mini-mill equipment from Belfast Mini Mills, which has the capacity to produce significant quantities of roving, batts, and yarn. The initial equipment setup, including a picker and carder, costs over $130,000, excluding additional costs for building modifications and electrical work. Through investing in improved and new equipment, the loan will enable EcoWool to meet the high demand for fibre processing and develop new products from waste wool.
Weaving Impacts
EcoWool will create jobs, providing living wages and training opportunities, contributing to the local economy. By purchasing wool above market value, EcoWool will support local farmers, enhancing their income and enabling them to avoid wasting wool. The mill will also facilitate the production of value-added products for local farms, increasing their revenue potential.
What’s more, EcoWool's operations will significantly reduce wool waste, diverting materials from landfills, burning, or dumping. By processing 30,000 lbs of waste wool into eco-friendly products, EcoWool will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve water. Wool pellets, one of EcoWool's primary products, have been shown to save 45 kg of CO2 equivalents per kg through water conservation and over 500 litres of water annually.
EcoWool is also conducting research with Brock University to explore the potential of wool pellets to replace peat in greenhouses and reduce chemical nitrogen fertilizer usage. The development of wool weed barriers could replace traditional plastic in gardening, further reducing environmental impact.
Breaking Tradition
One of EcoWool's major challenges is breaking through the historical perception of wool as primarily a material for clothing. To address this, EcoWool focuses on educating consumers and industries about the diverse applications of wool, from gardening products to eco-friendly alternatives to petrochemical products. Attending trade shows, markets, and events has helped EcoWool raise awareness and support for their mission.
Data collection and research are crucial for industry acceptance. EcoWool collaborates with academic institutions to gather data that demonstrates the environmental and economic benefits of wool products. This research is essential for gaining the support of greenhouses, farmers, and municipalities.
The funding from the Fair Finance Fund will enable EcoWool to establish and expand their waste wool processing capabilities, supporting local farmers, creating jobs, and developing sustainable products. By reducing wool waste and promoting eco-friendly alternatives, EcoWool will contribute to environmental sustainability and economic resilience in the community. Through education and collaboration, EcoWool aims to transform the perception and use of wool, fostering a circular economy and a greener future.
