Earth and Soul Farm
A Journey Rooted in Community and Growth
Found in the heart of West Nipissing, Ontario, Earth and Soul Farm embodies the spirit of local food production, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. Founded with a vision to provide fresh, nutritious produce year-round, the farm specializes in leafy greens and seasonal vegetables, catering to a diverse clientele that spans farmers' markets, local restaurants, and online shoppers. This dynamic approach underscores Earth and Soul Farm’s commitment to being a reliable source of locally-grown food and a vibrant contributor to the local food ecosystem.
“Our vision is for a future where our local food producing company is making a far greater contribution to the nutritional demands of the West Nipissing, North Bay and Sudbury communities and when we do so sustainably, we will help to build a stronger and healthier community.”
The journey of Earth and Soul Farm began modestly. Following a challenging first summer season as a farmers' market vendor, the farm initiated its first trials with microgreens in the fall of 2016. These trials were met with enthusiasm at the North Bay Farmers Market’s first-ever winter season. By the end of their first year, they had secured a partnership with Orchards Fresh Food Mart, a relationship that continues to thrive today.
In 2018, the farm expanded its product line to include cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, alongside bedding plants, selling these at local markets. The following year saw a significant upgrade to their greenhouse, increasing capacity and extending the growing season, which allowed them to supply fresh produce throughout the summer market season until October. The introduction of cut flowers added another layer to their diverse offerings.
Earth and Soul Farm's dedication to the community and the environment is unwavering. By leveraging sustainable practices and fostering local partnerships, they ensure a positive impact on both the economy and the environment. Their efforts not only provide nutritious food but also strengthen community bonds and support local food security.
Adapting and Innovating Through Challenges
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought new challenges, but Earth and Soul Farm adapted by installing a walk-in cooler to enhance product shelf life and adding a delivery service to meet customer needs. They also began offering products from other local farms, further strengthening their community ties. By March 2021, the farm had launched an online store, automating sales and inventory processes and making local produce more accessible.
A significant milestone was reached in October 2022 when Earth and Soul Farm moved to a larger location in West Nipissing. This move was strategic, aimed at expanding their land base for future growth. They acquired a modular container and hydroponic equipment for growing leafy greens in a controlled environment, though the unit is currently operating at 60% capacity as they await further funding.
A Vision for the Future
The loan from the Fair Finance Fund is set to be transformative for Earth and Soul Farm. It will enable them to fully operationalize their existing 40-foot modular container and acquire a second container dedicated to hydroponic growth. This expansion will significantly boost their production capacity, helping to meet the overwhelming local demand for their products. Additionally, the construction of two lean-to greenhouses will enhance production versatility, optimize resource use, and minimize waste.
With Fair Finance Fund funding, Earth and Soul Farm aims to create over five new jobs, support more than 25 regional suppliers, and inject over $200,000 into the regional economy. Their ambitious plan includes recirculating over $1,200,000 in food sales within Ontario. Socially and environmentally, the farm will improve food access by diversifying their crop range and increasing production capacity, ensuring a reliable supply of fresh, healthy produce year-round. Their commitment to hydroponic and sustainable farming practices will optimize resource efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and lower carbon emissions by minimizing long-distance food transportation.
