13 SUNS Ethiopian Cuisine
13 SUNS Ethiopian Cuisine is a vibrant, vegan kitchen dedicated to serving fusion dishes inspired by traditional East African recipes. With a 100% plant-based menu, they are committed to sustainability and introducing Ethiopian cuisine to a broader audience. They aim to provide a multi-sensory dining experience while educating customers about Ethiopian culture. By sourcing locally, cultivating organic produce in-house, using eco-friendly packaging, and repurposing scraps into eco-friendly fertilizers, 13 SUNS contributes to a greener, more conscious approach to dining.
“Our social mission is to further encourage sustainable practices that promote and protect our planet, eco-system, and all life on earth. Our farm to table initiatives, organic in-house garden towers, and eco-friendly packaging of products, are just some of the many ways we plan to follow through on our mission.”
Founded in 2020 at the Pickering Flea Market, 13 SUNS has grown through pop-ups and catering, overcoming numerous challenges along the way. The new establishment in Scarborough, set to open at Warden & Eglinton, marks a significant milestone for the business and the community. This expansion is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the founder and the support from customers, mentors, friends, and family.
The loan from the Fair Finance Fund has enabled 13 SUNS Ethiopian Cuisine to secure their permanent location in Scarborough, significantly expanding their capacity to serve a broader customer base with their distinctive vegan cuisine. This major milestone marks a proud moment for the entire community and after navigating many hurdles over the last three years, each obstacle has shaped their resilience. Says founder Hiruy Girmay, “The support from customers, corporate clients, mentors, friends, and family has been instrumental in our journey.” Support from the Fair Finance Fund will additionally provide operational support for the first two to three months, helping them navigate the initial work of establishing and sustaining their successful food venture beyond their existing catering business.
13 SUNS Ethiopian Cuisine's commitment to sustainability will lead to a reduced environmental impact through the use of eco-friendly packaging, whole ingredients, and effective food waste management practices. The expansion will also promote collaboration and cooperation within the food sector, fostering partnerships with local producers, processors, and other food businesses. 13 SUNS is also passionate about sharing their knowledge and awareness of Ethiopia’s diverse cuisine, hosting and co-hosting cooking workshops for youth and others interested in learning more.
P.S. 13 SUNS’ owner and founder is also a successful musician!
